5 Resolutions You Should Make This Year

2015Resolutions

At this point, you are probably sick of hearing “New Year, New You.” Right? Regardless of how successful your resolutions were last year, there are some lifestyle tweaks that are worth seriously committing to this year. Here are a few simple lifestyle upgrades to consider as you kick off the new year:

  1. Get organized. Take some time to clean out your inbox, organize your household documents, and clear out the clutter in your house. Donate things you haven’t used in over a year, and put everything else in its proper place. Not only will staying organized make your home look better, but it will eliminate unnecessary stress of looking for things when you really need them.
  2. Make time to recharge. It’s easy to let our health fall by the wayside when we’re busy, and if you are like me, sleep is the first thing I will cut out to make sure everything gets done. Don’t sacrifice your health this year and make sure you get enough sleep each night (ideally 7-8 hours). A consistent lack of sleep has myriad of adverse effects on your life including but not limited to cognitive impairment, stress, and increased chance of injury. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule will give you the rest you need to stay motivated and productive.
  3. Live an active lifestyle. You don’t need to drastically increase your time spent at the gym to fulfill this one. Small changes over time can make a big difference. Take the stairs instead of an elevator. Take a short walk after work or after picking up the kids from school. Try to stand whenever possible. Track your performance using a pedometer or fitness tracker and compete with friends. Starting a new workout regime is great too, but don’t forget little lifestyle changes can sometimes do just as much to help improve your fitness.
  4. Stick to a budget. Did you spend too much last year? Do you know what you spent your hard earned money on? Take a look at where you spent the most last year, and where you can commit to making cuts. You may be able to easily save money by making your own coffee in the morning or evaluating your energy choices to see if you are getting the best rates. Work out a reasonable budget and keep track of how you are doing. Always remember to pay yourself first by putting money into savings [even a little bit makes a difference!]. Keep track of your finances using a virtual wallet or simple spreadsheet, and you could end up significantly improving your financial position by the end of 2015.
  5. Try new things. Take up a new hobby such as knitting, improve your cooking, or start listening to a new podcast weekly. Learning is a lifelong process, and you should always set aside time to pursue your passions. Want to learn a new language? Great! Use TODAY as a starting point for your goal, whatever it is!
